san diego county law This is only our third post of the “It Must be Great Making Your Own Hours” series. The purpose of this particular series is to expose some of the behind-the-scenes parts of running a business that an eager future owner may not have thought of yet. It is not to discourage anyone from opening their own business, only to give insight into what to expect. Especially in California, and as for this article’s purposes, San Diego County specifically.

Basically the County of San Diego has hired an outside company that is going to oversee insurance. Everything from:

  • General Liability with minimums of $1 million per Occurrance and Aggregate of $2 million
  • Auto Liability
  • Professional Liability
  • Plus Employer Liability, Workers Comp (if these apply)

All of the above must be written with a minimum Best rating of A or better AND financial classification of VII or higher, whatever that means.

This is the kicker: the County must now be added as additionally insured. As a matter of fact it states: The County of San Diego, the members of the Board of Supervisors of the County and the officers, agents, employees and volunteers of the County, individually and collectively.

My point is not that this hopefully will cost any more in addition to what you are currently paying for insurance, but who knows. More so, it doesn’t take into consideration the amount of times that this takes away from the small business owner. Also, small business creates jobs and should be encouraged, treating small business like large corporations is definitely NOT the way to go. And don’t even begin to compare going into business in CA versus another state, because I think you’ll find it varies greatly.

Anyway, I only included about half of the items the county is requiring in the list above. I find it interesting that I have been in business over 14 years as have many of my friends have too, and this is the first we are hearing of these “unknown” laws. Best wishes to you on your business endeavors, just know what you are up against.
