ActivityActivity vs. Exercise

I think there is a lot of confusion as to what staying active means and how that varies from exercise. While it certainly is important to exercise on a regular basis with strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and flexibility exercises, I believe it is equally if not more important to stay active. Cumulatively, living an active life burns a lot of calories and is simple to do. Here are 10 examples:

  • Walk to work if possible
  • Ride your bike to work
  • Choose a distant parking spot on your next grocery store visit instead of wasting time driving around for a close one
  • Take your dog for a walk (which you should already be doing daily anyway)
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Turn an passive activity into an active one by conducting a meeting while walking instead of in an office (Steve Jobs was known for this)
  • Go to your local park for some frizbee or a game of catch
  • Hit some balls at the driving range
  • Hit some balls at the batting cage
  • Limit your television time and come up with 3 activities you haven’t done in a while
