Calorie Increase Contributes to Obesity
Just read an interesting article about portion distortion and how serving sizes have increased over the years. The studies were performed at Rutgers University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The conclusion was that 20 years ago we ate less than half as many calories for a given food as we do now.
The study cited the following 6 foods: hamburger, blueberry muffin, plain bagel, strawberry cheesecake, pepperoni pizza slice, and movie popcorn. Clearly not healthy from the start 20 years ago, but now even more so.
Hamburger used to have 333 calories, but now boasts 590, for a 77% increase.
Blueberry muffin was 210, and now consists of 500 calories, a 138% increase.
Plain bagel packed in 140 calories and now is a whopping 350, which is a 150% more.
Strawberry cheesecake was 260 and now is 640, for a 146% increase.
Pepperoni pizza was 500 calories per slice and now, hold on to your pants, is 850! That’s just one slice!
Popcorn at the movies as 270 and is now 630, a 133% increase.
This is pretty alarming, but something I think people should know. I don’t believe a food in and of itself to be bad, just too much of anything isn’t good. Just some food for thought.
