Lack of consistency is a big problem in any area of life, and none more than with exercise. Or put another way, being consistent is super important in everything! This is another article in our Optimum Philosophies series, and I felt it’s important enough to really delve into it.
I mean, think about it, is it possible to become proficient at anything or see improvement in almost any area without consistency? We’ll come back to exercise later, but what about everyday stuff? Is consistency important when it comes to eating? What happens if you want to lose weight but insist on eating pizza and ice cream everyday? Well most likely you will NOT lose weight unless you decide to eat healthy foods and to do it consistently. Even if you start to lose weight but then slide back to poor eating habits, the weight will return.
What about getting out of credit card debt? Hopefully none of you reading this are in major debt, but if you are, you need to start paying down the principal and pay more than just the minimum amount due. And you have to be consistent in doing this unless you want to be paying on that card for a number of years most likely.
And bookkeeping? If you own a business and wait until it’s time to file your taxes and you haven’t kept up your books, well then you have a mess on your hands because you weren’t consistent about keeping them up.
Sports? If you want to be good and you aren’t born with God-given talent, you will need to practice consistently to get good. And even if you are born with God-given talent, consistently practicing will allow you to be better.
In my profession I see so many people approach exercise without consistency. And that is the single most important factor as it is with so many other things in life. If you want results or to make progress, then start being consistent. Do it with savings for retirement, do it with practice for golf or any sport you want to be good at, do it with your email newsletters if you have a business, and do it with anything else that is important in your life.
