Marketing is the main responsibility and should be the first priority of every business owner. Not recognizing this is one of the most common mistakes I see among business owners. I, too, failed to see the importance of this in the beginning. As a matter of fact, it took me years to recognize just how important this is. And yes, this is another segment of “It Must be Great Making Your Own Hours”.
Marketing isn’t necessarily advertising, however, advertising IS a type of marketing. Marketing is simply letting people know that your product or service exists. Every business needs customers, no matter what it is that they offer. Without customers business dries up, so this becomes the #1 priority for any business. And to get customers, and continue bringing in customers, you have to continue to market.
From there, I like to break marketing into 2 types: online and offline marketing. Both are important, and neither should be neglected. Some examples of online marketing is setting up a website and then using search engine optimization (SEO) to get visitors to your site. Blogging is another example and blogs are often a part of a website. Then there’s social media and email marketing. And don’t forget paid ads like Google Adwords and Facebook ads.
As far as offline marketing goes, there’s all types. Most people think about print advertising and things like business cards, brochures, fliers, signs, postcards, and letters. While these are the tangible points, what really matters is not the WHAT, but the HOW and to WHO.
This was just a very brief glimpse into what I believe is the most important part of any business. The types of marketing I outlined are just the tip of the iceburg. It’s what’s under the surfact that counts!
