Dark soda carries cancer riskSoda Cancer Risk

Most people realize by now that drinking soda is not good for you, but most don’t realize that soda now carries a cancer risk. At least in California it does. A new report suggests that it may contain a carcinogenic compound called 4-methylimidazole, also known as 4-MEI. This additive is made from a synthetic compound and can be found in most dark-colored sodas, according to Melaina Juntti, in her article, New Dangers of Drinking Soda, which appears in the May issue of Men’s Journal.

Research performed at John Hopkins found that regular consumption of cola, diet as well as regular, may raise your risk of cancer. So far, the FDA has not stepped in to regulate this, however, California passed a law requiring any product with 29 micrograms of the 4-MEI chemical to carry a cancer warning. Researchers say a single 12-ounce serving of cola can contain as much as 353 micrograms or the chemical.
