Sustainable packaging is the way of the future
Just read a great article in Entrepreneur magazine covering sustainable packaging out of Stockholm and Paris. Tomorrow Machine is a design firm that creates a series of sustainable food packaging under the name, This Too Shall Pass, that is made out of natural biodegradable materials that disintegrate once you are done with it, according to Andrew Gibbs.
Sounds funny to say, but the packaging is actually quite beautiful! The Basmati Rice concept, intended for dry food, is made of soft blue beeswax, printed with soy ink.
Another line, the Olive Oil concept, is intended for oil-based food and is made of caramelized sugar coated with wax. You can crack it open like an egg to get to the food inside. After it’s used, the package melts away once it comes into contact with water, writes Gibbs.
The there’s the Rasperry Smoothie concept, intended for liquids with a short life span like ice cream or fresh juice. It’s made of water and agar seaweed and reacts to its environment by shrinking over time when exposed to heat. The result is that it shrinks as the product is used.
In the U.S. alone more than 150 million single-use beverage containers are sold every year, so Tomorrow Machine’s concepts provide a very useful and necessary solution to reducing waste. The containers sport bold colors, simple shapes, and like I said, they’re beautiful! I think you’ll agree if you see one that they are quite a work of art!
