eleanor roosevelt great mind This is another post of our Optimum Philosophies series, and revolves around a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” I think this is an excellent quote that I just love because it says so much in such few words.

I don’t know how many of you out there are familiar with Napolean Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”, but if you are familiar with the concept that like attracts like, and thinking positive thoughts while staying away from negativity helps attract good things to your life, provided you take action, then you are familiar with Napolean’s philosophy. By the way, if you haven’t yet read his book, you really should. He was WAY ahead of his time. I could go on and on about this book, but that will have to be in another article.

If you break down Eleanor’s quote, gossip would certainly fall under small minds discuss people category. And who cares to hear gossip? I would rather watch paint dry as it’s a waste of precious time, and time is my most valuable commodity. In addition, it shows a lack of integrity if it’s something that couldn’t be said to the person’s face and only behind their back. Either way, it doesn’t interest me in the least.

And events, well a few moments may need to be dedicated to events to keep someone informed of important news. Say for example, a recent credit card crime was committed at a store where you shop. Well if you know your neighbor also shops there, it may be justified to notify them in case any steps need to be taken to prevent fraud. This actually happened to my husband and I.

However, the majority of your time spent discussing ideas is by far the best choice. I love to get  into a deep discussion about something I’m passionate about. It’s stimulating, it’s exciting, it spurns creativity, well you get the idea.
