According to an article on Drug-Injury.com, antibiotics are linked to tendon rupture pertaining to a certain class of them known as fluoroquinolones.  Some of the named antibiotics are Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Tequin, Ortho-McNeil’s Levaquin, and Bayer’s Cipro.

I personally train a client, Mary Stepnowsky, that experienced this exact injury in the form of a rotator cuff strain after taking an antibiotic. Because Mary is so proactive about her health and did her own research, she discovered the link herself before coming across the article on Drug-Injury.com.

The consumer advocacy group Public Citizen filed a petition with the FDA back in August of 2006, according to Tom Lamb, the author of this article, requesting that the agency order drug companies to put a “black-box” warning about the associated risks.The drug labels do currently warn of the risk of tendon ruptures, however, the warning is not contained in a black-box, considered the FDA’s most serious warning, according to Lamb.

Black box warnings appear in bold type surrounded by a black box so that it jumps out from among the other type set, Lamb say. This warning also makes it mandatory that any advertisements carry the same black box.

Other areas in addition to the rotator cuff (located in the shoulder) for possible tendon rupture includes the Achilles tendon, the biceps, the hand, and the thumb, according to Lamb.Some words of advice: no one has your best interests in mind better than you do, so always be proactive about your health and do your own research.
