Baja Bike Trip
We just finished the ultimate bike trip from Tecate to San Filipe. Not only is this the furthest we’ve ever ridden in one shot, but it’s been the most fun! We started in Tecate around 10:00am, a little later than planned after first meeting up in Jamul at 5:00am then carpooling to a second location where we all met to head down to Baja.
There were 13 people total and the weather was perfect. Other than our friend, Neil, my husband, Lonnie, and I were just meeting everyone else for the first time. Just after a couple miles in, one guy named Danny, got a flat but we were able to change it while we stopped for gas in a small village. Gas was $10 a gallon, but we were happy to have access to it as that means less to transport. Unfortunately shortly after the first flat, Danny got a second flat and was forced to throw his bike in the back of our trail truck. From there we went through all kinds of amazing terrain and elevation changes, from dirt to sand to rock, eventually arriving in San Filipe safely around 7:30pm.
The next day was spent just relaxing after the 220 mile ride. After getting a good night’s sleep, I ate a sting ray egg scramble with onions and bell peppers for breakfast. Pretty darn good I have to say! Kind of surprising we never serve that on the menu here in the states. And I should mention that our hotel is right on the Sea of Cortez! It doesn’t get much better than this! And it’s only $70 a night!
We were able to bring our dirt bikes right into our hotel rooms the night before, so it was great just to be able to push them back outside for a few fine adjustments in preparation for the ride back tomorrow. I needed to lower my forks as it made my bike too squirrelly in the deep sand. After which we relaxed by the pool then walked the 2 blocks down the main street to dine on some delicious shrimp and beers for lunch in the town of San Filipe.
Kurt Senior, our oldest member of the group, purchased some delicious fish from a local fisherman then paid the small hotel to cook it up along with fresh tortillas, beans, and rice. It was excellent! From there we had the entire restaurant and bar to ourselves and talked the owner into ordering the UFC pay-per-view fights for us. How cool was that?
And what a great bunch of guys! Corey is Kurt Senior’s son and super cool. He was calling me his little sister by halfway through the trip. His best friend was Jack, the joker of the group. Super funny guy. Then there was Doug, a really nice guy and great rider that does a lot of traveling and lives in Vegas. And of course Kurt Senior and his riding partner in the Razor, Rueven, both pilots and super cool. And Danny, who it turns out knows a mutual friend of ours, what a small world! Then our friend Neil that invited us and his buddy, Rich, who was also an awesome guy. And did I mention that I’m the only girl on this trip?
Next day we headed back, this time taking a different route across a dry lake bed then through the mountains where we encountered some rain and sleet up in the higher elevations. We arrived safely back in Tecate around 4:30pm, this time in only about 6 hours and 190 miles as compared to the ride down. What an awesome adventure! I love my life.
