Healthy on the Inside - Human body diagramHealthy on the Inside

It’s one thing to be healthy on the outside, but are you healthy on the inside? True health is more than just toned muscles and low body fat. True health means you are equally as healthy inside your body as you are on the outside, and that requires you take inventory of what your body fuels up on.

Does your food intake consist primarily of processed foods? Or are you consuming whole foods made up of lean proteins and lots of vegetables? Hopefully it’s the ladder of the two. But are you eating much fish and poultry, or just all red meat?

And is your vegetable intake dark greens, reds and yellows? Foods of the rainbow variety contain the most nutrients as compared to those of the starchy variety, like corn. Are you eating fruits that are in season and locally grown? Or are the fruits you consume shipped in from out of the area and excessively large indicating hormone use?

Do you consume healthy fats like coconut oil and olive oil? Or are you partial to deep frying your foods with batters or breadcrumbs? Do you tend to salt everything before you taste it? If so, you are probably missing out on the delicious taste of fresh vegetables.

What else goes in your body aside from food? Do you smoke or drink excessive amounts of alcohol on a regular basis? Did you realize that smoking can interfere with your body’s natural ability to absorb nutrients?

Do you protect your skin from harmful UV rays? And what about getting in the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals? Granted, with a perfect diet, supplementation may not be necessary, but most people don’t have anywhere even close to a perfect diet.

Anyway, you get the idea. You can workout until the cows come home but unless you look at health from a holistic perspective where what you put into your body counts just as much if not more than your outward appearance, you are missing out. This is the first of a 3-part series, so be sure to check back next week when we get deeper into eating clean. Live life to the optimum!
