For beginners just starting an exercise program, it can be confusing as to what is normal and what is not. There’s a big difference between muscle fatigue and joint/ muscle pain. Many people that are not used to working out are unfamiliar with the feeling of muscle fatigue and so confuse that with true pain. Muscle fatigue is a natural thing that occurs when working out, and it is expected. Muscle pain on the other hand is a sign that something is wrong. It could mean that you are doing an exercise incorrectly or possibly you suffered a strain or sprain. If you notice the body part in question to be swollen, feel warm to the touch, or discoloration of the skin, then stop and seek medical advice. However, if the muscle just feels tired, then most likely you just got a good workout. Usually a hot bath and drinking plenty of water will make you feel better. If you are unsure if you’re doing an exercise correctly, seek the help of a professional. But most importantly, continue exercising even if that means making modifications for a healthy, balanced program.
