Bullet proof coffeeBullet Proof Coffee

Bullet Proof Coffee is a delicious combination of black coffee, real butter, and coconut oil, creating a very satisfying filling effect, and boosting metabolism at the same time. I was already using a version of this recipe that I was given by a friend, but I recently came across a great article in Men’s Journal, written by Tyler Graham, talking about this very recipe and how it got started.

As it turns out, Bulletproof’s creator, Dave Asprey, created his own version of bullet proof coffee after a climbing trip to Tibet back in 2004. Asprey says he observed  these Sherpas “Live mostly on a mixture of yak-butter tea for days on end.” He says her personally found it to creamy, good, and rejuvenating. He felt better than he had on any other high-altitude trip, and that’s what convinced him to come up with his own recipe.

According to the Human Nutrition and Metabolism Laboratory at Skidmore College, the omega-3 fatty acids in the butter and coconut oil may help reduce inflammation and lower your LDL cholesterol levels. Research even shows that the oil boosts your metabolism by up to 5%, burning an extra 120 calories a day.

Turns out the Tibetans have been drinking these buttery drinks for centuries, but not until recently has this concoction made an appearance in the U.S. Aspey now has his recipe in more than 50 coffee shops nationwide and plans to open Bulletproof storefronts next year, starting in Santa Monica.

My personal version of this includes one cup hot coffee, one raw farm fresh egg, one Tbsp fresh butter, one Tbsp coconut oil, and one Tbsp pure honey, then mix in a blender. It comes out creamy and delicious!
