This is the second post of the outdoor series we’re doing this month, and today the focus is kayaking. If you can get to a body of water with a kayak no matter where you live, you’ll definitely have fun while you’re exercising. That’s really the secret…when it’s fun it doesn’t feel like work and before you know it you’ve expended a bunch of calories. If you live here in San Diego, Aqua Adventures on Mission bay is a great place to get started. You can rent a kayak for an hour for next to nothing, and you’ll definitely walk away feeling exhilarated having burned between 500-850 calories depending on your weight and the intensity. Wow!

They are really cool down there and the last time I went I took my dog, Fender, along in the kayak. They didn’t mind at all and I guess dogs are regulars around there. Fender preferred to be up front so he could check things out and as we rounded some rocks, he spotted a huge sea lion. Before I knew it he had jumped out & swam over to the rocks trying to get the big guy to play! The sea lion took one look at him and dove in the water to get away. Poor Fender, while he was disappointed (I think he thought it was a dog) that he didn’t get to play with him, he swam right back to the kayak and had a great time checking out the other wildlife from the boat. So if you haven’t tried it yet, step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Once you get used to it, ocean kayak offers even more of a challenge and La Jolla cove lets you get right up next to the seals for great photos!
