I Don’t Believe in New Year’s Resolutions
It’s 2017 and so I figured I’d change things up a bit by sharing my philosophy on new year’s resolutions: I don’t believe in them. Instead, I believe in ongoing goal setting throughout the year. This year, my husband Lonnie and I decided to start a new tradition of discussing what we achieved, but also what we learned. That way, God willing, we can avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Personal Goals
I’ve always practiced what I preach, weight training regularly combined with outdoor sports. But I didn’t feel I was getting enough aerobic conditioning in for heart health. I also knew that I naturally step up my training when I have a competition to prepare for. So I signed up for my first Enduro mountain bike race, which I’m excited about at the end of this month. I have been preparing since the beginning of December.
Financial security is another area I wanted to improve upon. While we’ve had retirement accounts since we were much younger, I wanted to learn more about investing on my own. So I started reading books on the subject to educate myself. Then during the second half of last year, I opened up two Vanguard targeted retirement funds, one for each of us. That allows us to get away from the active management fees associated with financial advisors.
Professional Goals
I believe good health encompasses physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. So I’ve often thought about adding a class that focuses on the mental component to compliment all the physical training we do. So this year we’re adding a meditation class to our roster.
One of my mistakes after first opening my studio was thinking that boot camp classes would be popular. While they’re plenty popular for other gyms, they’re not popular for our niche. So learning from that, we began focusing our classes on functional training and will be adding an Olympic Lifting 101 class very soon.
I’m very excited about this coming year and hopefully you are too! Remember, if you don’t like where you are in life, change it. You have complete control on how you live your life. Live it to the optimum!
